One of the most prominent Gay communities in the nation is found in Houston, Texas. On June 27, 2009 an estimated 150,000 participants joined in the celebration of Gay Pride in the city's Montrose District, commemorating the Stonewall Riots of New York City in 1969.

It was in that year on the morning of June 28 at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village — a culturally diverse neighborhood in New York City — when the homosexual community violently resisted government-sanctioned hate crimes against sexual minorities.
