STDs: Common Symptoms & Tips on Prevention

What are sexually transmitted diseases?
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections you can get by having sex with someone who has the infection. These infections can be passed by having vaginal sex, anal sex, oral sex or skin-to-skin contact. STDs can be caused by a virus, bacteria or parasite. STDs caused by a virus can sometimes be treated with medication, but cannot be cured. These include HIV, genital warts (HPV), genital herpes, and Hepatitis B. STDs caused by bacteria can be treated and cured with medications called antibiotics. These include chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.

Am I at risk for having an STD?
If you've ever had sex, you may be at risk for having an STD. Your risk is higher if you have had many sex partners, have had sex with someone who has had many partners or have had sex without using condoms.
