Alcohol
Slang = booze, brew, giggle juice, hooch, spirits, toddy
Alcohol is a depressant. Although many people don’t think about it, alcohol is the most commonly used and widely abused psychoactive drug in the world. Even at low doses, alcohol significantly impairs the judgment and coordination required to drive a car or operate machinery safely. Alcohol can also impair judgment in sexual situations, often resulting in high-risk, unprotected sex. Alcohol should not be mixed with barbiturates, tranquilizers (such as Valium), and especially not with heroin. Eating can lessen the intensity of alcohol, as can drinking more natural forms such as beer or wine. Alcohol is especially damaging to the liver.

Tobacco
Slang = cigs, smokes, cancer sticks, fags
Tobacco is our most addictive recreational drug. Nicotine, the active principle, is a stimulant, and very poisonous. Every year, tobacco use kills more Americans than World War II and the Vietnam War combined. That’s more than 440,000 smoking-related deaths each year. Chew and snuff are less addicting than pipes and cigars, which are less addicting than cigarettes. Addiction and health risks can be minimized by limiting use to once a week or less. Tobacco can cause cancer and heart disease, and tobacco smoke is a factor in lung disease.

Marijuana
Slang = Aunt Mary, chronic, dope, ganja, grass, hash, herb, Mary Jane, pot, reefer, skunk, weed
Marijuana is a depressant that usually gives users a relaxed and sometimes euphoric feeling. While there are no known cases of marijuana overdose, smoking marijuana on a regular basis can result in many of the same respiratory problems that tobacco smokers have. The amount of tar inhaled by marijuana smokers and the level of carbon monoxide absorbed are 3 to 5 times greater than among tobacco smokers. This may be due to marijuana users inhaling more deeply and holding the smoke in the lungs. Marijuana smoke contains some of the same cancer-causing compounds as tobacco, sometimes in higher concentrations. Someone who smokes 1 to 3 joints can produce the same lung damage and potential cancer risk as smoking five times as many cigarettes.

Cocaine
Slang for cocaine powder = blow, bump, caine, candy, coke, dust, lady caine, powder, snow, white
Slang for smokeable cocaine = crack, freebase, rock, pebbles, stones

Cocaine is the most potent stimulant of natural origin — a powerfully addictive stimulant that directly affects the brain. Cocaine can be snorted, injected and even smoked in some forms of the drug. Snorting cocaine can result in chronically runny nose, nosebleeds, loss of smell, hoarseness, and problems swallowing. Injecting cocaine can result in severe allergic reactions and increased risk for contracting HIV, Hepatitis and other blood-borne diseases. Chronic users of cocaine can become malnourished due to the drug's ability to decrease appetite. Cocaine is highly addictive and those who smoke cocaine appear to develop an addiction to the drug more rapidly that those who snort it.

Amyl Nitrite
Slang = Poppers, Rush, Jungle Juice,

Amyl nitrite is sold illegally; however, butyl nitrite or isobutyl nitrite is legally sold in small brown bottles as video head cleaner, room deodorizer, or leather cleaner at adult novelty stores. Commonly known as poppers, they are used by sniffing the vapors from an open bottle. The “head rush” effects are felt within a few seconds and last for 1-2 minutes. Poppers cause muscles around blood vessels to relax, making your heart speed up to pump more blood. Because poppers cause muscles in the anus and vagina to relax, they are often used during sex. Studies show that poppers reduce the functioning of the immune system for several days after use. Because poppers cause blood vessels to open, it is easier to get an infection, including sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV. Poppers can also affect a person’s judgment, putting them at higher risk for contracting STDs or HIV.

Methamphetamines
Slang = crissy, tina, meth, tweak, geek, speed, ice, wig
Methamphetamine (meth) is an extremely addictive stimulant drug that strongly activates certain systems in the brain. Even in small doses, meth can increase wakefulness and physical activity and decrease appetite. A brief, intense sensation, or rush, is reported by those who smoke or inject meth. Oral ingestion or snorting produces a long-lasting high instead of a rush, which reportedly can continue for as long as half a day.  Some users report strong sexual urges and many of these participate in very high-risk sexual activities putting them at risk for HIV and other STDs. Methamphetamines are more toxic than cocaine and can cause worse problems when abused. Snorting can result in chronically runny nose, nosebleeds, loss of smell, rotten teeth, and weight loss. Injecting cocaine can result in weight loss, severe allergic reactions and increased risk for contracting HIV, Hepatitis and other blood-borne diseases. The withdrawal symptoms, especially the depression and physical agony, are reported to be worse than heroin or cocaine, and often addicts will drop out of recovery programs.

Ecstasy
Slang = Adam, E, X, XTC, MDMA
Ecstasy is a synthetic drug with amphetamine-like and hallucinogenic properties. Taken as a pill, the drug is often taken at dance clubs or parties to enhance the music and feel more connected to others. Because it increases heart rate and blood pressure and causes dehydration and overheating, this can be a very dangerous drug, especially if used by people who are dancing at a club. Long-term use of ecstasy can cause permanent damage to the brain. Ecstasy should not be mixed with alcohol or other depressants.

LSD
Slang = acid, blotter, cid, doses, and trips
Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is the most potent hallucinogen known to man. LSD is most commonly sold on the streets as blotter paper, or sheets of paper soaked in LSD and perforated into individual one-quarter inch squares. The effects of LSD are unpredictable. They depend on the amount taken, the user’s personality, mood, and expectations, and the surroundings in which the drug is used. The hallucinations while on the drug can be frightening and can cause panic in the user. LSD should not be used when depressed. The effects of LSD last 8 to 12 hours, and users may be fatigued the next day. Tolerance to LSD develops very quickly.

GHB
Slang = G, Georgia Home Boy, Grievous Bodily Harm, Liquid Ecstasy, cap
Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), is a compound that was initially used by body builders to stimulate muscle growth. It has become popular as a recreational drug at dance clubs among partygoers, and is sometimes known as the date-rape drug. GHB is a synthetically produced central nervous system depressant. In liquid form, GHB is colorless and odorless and has a salty or soapy taste; however it is often diluted in liquids and virtually undetectable. GHB is often produced in clandestine laboratories; therefore, the purity and strength of doses vary.  Adverse effects of GHB include vomiting, seizure-like activity, loss of consciousness, respiratory arrest, coma, and death. GHB should never be combined with alchohol.

PCP
Slang = angel dust, supergrass, killer weed, embalming fluid, rocket fuel
Phencyclidine (PCP) is sold illegally as tablets, capsules, and colored powders. It is normally used in one of three ways — snorted, smoked, or eaten. When it is smoked, PCP is often applied to a leafy material such as mint, parsley, oregano, tobacco or marijuana. Many people who use PCP may do it unknowingly because PCP is often used as an additive and can be found in marijuana, LSD, or methamphetamine. PCP may have effects that mimic certain primary symptoms of schizophrenia, such as delusions, mental turmoil, paranoia, aggressive behavior and violence.

Ketamine
Slang = Breakfast Cereal, Cat Valium, Ket, Kit Kat, New Ecstasy, Special-K, Super-K, Vitamin K, Vit K
Ketamine hydrochloride is a central nervous system depressant and a rapid-acting general anesthetic. It is sold illegally on the streets usually as a white powder. It has sedative-hypnotic, analgesic, and hallucinogenic properties. It is marketed in the U.S. and a number of foreign countries for use as a general anesthetic in both human and veterinary medical practices. Since ketamine is an anesthetic, it stops the user from feeling pain, which could lead the user to inadvertently cause injury to them self. Some use Ketamine as a sexual stimulant, which could lead to high-risk sexual activity .Overdose can result in seizures.

Mushrooms
Slang = Caps, Magic Mushrooms, Shrooms
Certain types of naturally occurring mushrooms contain hallucinogenic chemicals — psilocybin and psilocin. These mushrooms are generally grown in Mexico and Central America and have been used in native rituals for thousands of years. The dried mushrooms can be eaten, or brewed and consumed as tea. When ingested, mushrooms produce a syndrome similar to alcohol intoxication sometimes accompanied by hallucinations.

Heroin
Slang = Big H, Blacktar, Brown Sugar, Dope, Horse, Junk, Mud, Skag, Smack
Heroin is a highly addictive drug derived from morphine, which is obtained from the opium poppy. The white to dark brown powder or tar-like substance is a “downer” that affects the brain’s pleasure systems and interferes with the brain’s ability to perceive pain. Heroin can be injected, smoked, or snorted. Injection users are at high risk of contracting HIV or Hepatitis C. The opiates are nearly as addictive as tobacco. Heroin and alcohol should not be mixed.

Viagra/Cialis/Levitra
Slang = Niagra, Boner Pill, Blue Pill, Hard Meds, Peckerupper, Stiff Medicine, Love Pill, See Alice
Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra are all prescription medications to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is when a man has problems getting or maintaining an erection long enough for sex. Although these are prescription medications, they easily available on the street, in clubs or via the Internet. Many young men without ED use them to enhance sexual performance. Because some recreational drugs, like methamphetamines, cause men to lose their erections, they take one of these medications to counteract the effects. However, mixing ED medications with meth, cocaine or poppers, can be very dangerous even leading to death.

Promethazine with Codeine
Slang = Drank, Po’ Up, Sizzurp, Lean, Purple, Texas Oil
Promethazine with codeine is a prescription medication used as a recreational drug often called sizzurp. Said to have been created in Houston, the beverage is typically created by mixing the (usually) purple-colored medication with Sprite soda and a Jolly Rancher candy. Promethazine is an anti-histamine causing motor skill impairment, lethargy, and extreme drowsiness in large quantities. Codeine is a downer and is mainly responsible for the euphoria felt by users. Respiratory depression is a potentially serious or fatal adverse drug reaction associated with the use of codeine, but mainly the danger of this drug lies in the much more potent depressant Promethazine, which can result in respiratory or cardiac arrest.

Dextromethorphan
Slang = tussin, DXM, robo, robotrip, skittles, drank
Dextromethorphan (DXM) is a cough-suppressing ingredient in a variety of over-the-counter cold and cough medications. Dextromethorphan, a semisynthetic narcotic, is an ingredient found in any cold medicine with "DM" or "Tuss" in the title or name. It is sold as a syrup, pill or lozenge. At high doses, dextromethorphan produces dissociative, psychedelic effects similar to those of PCP and ketamine. The cold medicine can be combined with other medications, such as acetaminophen or phenylephrine, which can cause permanent bodily damage or death when taken at high doses.
